The Attitudes of Top Executives toward Company Welfare for the Middle and Old Employees


Abstract
This study focused on company welfare which is expected as a way to improve the well-being of middle and old employees dealing with mandatory retirement and longer life expectancy. The purposes of this study were 1) to find the perception of top executives about company welfare; 2) describe the attitudes of top executives toward the middle and old employees; 3) investigate the relationship between the attitudes of top executives toward the middle and old employees and the subsequent hiring policy toward these middle and old employees; 4) to find the will of top executives to provide preretirement programs and the predictive variables that account for the will of top executives to provide preretirement programs; 5) to investigate alternatives to deliver preretirement programs. This study employed a descriptive research design using survey method with a mailed questionnaires. This research population is comprised of executives of business corporations which hired over 300 employees. Sampling is done by complete enumeration from annual report of Korean corporation. The sample included 521 stock companies. Out of 521, 197(37.8%) returned the questionnaires.
Most of top executives thought that company welfare was partial of social security system and benefit should direct to daily life of employees rather than independent programs of each company. The mean of attitudes toward aging is 26.4. The respondents expressed pretty positive attitudes toward aging. The relationship between the attitudes of top executives toward the middle and old employees and the policy of hiring them was proved significance at the level of .05. Few company provided preretirement program to their employees. however, about 70% of top executives recognized and felt necessity of preretirement program. The result of logistic regression, the recognized and felt top executives answered the planning of preretirement program 2.38 or 6.68 times more than top executives who did not recognize and felt necessity of it. Top executives thought that preretirement program should be done by social welfare agency and for one or two month once or twice a week.
On conclusions, top executives considered capability of work when retiring the employees so that supplementary system such as rehiring program for mandatory retirement. This study showed the possibility to provide preretirement program for the middle and old employees as a kind of company welfare.
